Drew Penner

I’m a reporter, broadcaster and digital content creator from Canada with more than two decades of reporting, editing and photography experience under my belt.

Over the previous five years, I’ve worked for Weeklys news publications as a reporter for the Scotts Valley Press Banner, a contributing reporter and editor for Good Times Santa Cruz and Metro Silicon Valley, and as the editor of the Los Gatan newspaper.

My reporting has appeared in the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail, LATimes.com, Flaunt Magazine, the Winnipeg Free Press, GreenEntrepreneur.com, ROVA Magazine and on KCRW (NPR for Southern California) as well as The California Report.

I’ve earned multiple California Journalism Awards and a Newspapers Canada Award.

I had the chance to work under Drew Penner at the Los Gatan newspaper. As a younger journalist, I had plenty of questions, and Drew was always available with helpful answers on everything from AP style to reporting etiquette. He gave prompt and thoughtful feedback on my work, and explained his edits in a way that was both clear and educational. Drew assigned interesting stories, was always open to pitches, and made the remote experience flexible to my needs. It was a great learning environment to grow as a writer.
