My Story
My first foray into the media business was interviewing a children’s entertainer down at the big top in my hometown. I went through a high school co-op placement at my local daily newspaper and got my Bachelor’s of Journalism from Ryerson University, which is regarded as Canada’s top J-skool.
After graduating, I worked for a few months at the Calgary Herald doing digital sales. There I freelanced a feature piece that was picked up by a Manitoba newspaper. As layoffs continued to mount, I took a job at the Innisfail Province as a reporter/photographer. I worked there for a year, covering rodeos, court, agriculture, the impact of an oil spill and the local hockey team that was coached by a famous NHL veteran.
I worked for two years at the Comox Valley Echo, in Courtenay, British Columbia, along the Georgia Strait. My job was to cover Cumberland Council, attend hospital board meetings, report on court proceedings and dive into the status of environmental affairs in that picturesque land. I spent the next couple years on the other side of Vancouver Island, producing a weekly music and culture radio show for CHMZ Tuff City Radio, freelancing for a variety of publications and writing for the Tofino-Ucluelet Westerly newspaper.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, I volunteered in-studio with DJs at KCRW. I also did a news internship there, writing host copy, reporting segments for local broadcasts of NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition, and assisting with the Greater LA magazine program. I also wrote for Flaunt Magazine and worked on a fill-in basis for City News Service, reporting on wildfires, crime and other breaking news.
For the past few years, I’ve been reporting, editing and taking photos for Weeklys, based out of Santa Cruz. While I edit the Los Gatan newspaper in Silicon Valley, I also report for the Scotts Valley Press Banner, and contribute to Good Times Santa Cruz, the Pajaronian and Metro Silicon Valley.
