While reporting in British Columbia, I got to see how community journalism could have a huge impact—like when readers responded to an article I wrote about a heating oil theft by replenishing the victim’s supply, or the time an article I wrote about an environmental mishap spurred criticism of the federal government during Question Period in the House of Commons.

I spent two years at the Comox Valley Echo reporting on health care, municipal politics, the environment, the military and the courts.

Meanwhile, I became the Vancouver Island correspondent for a Whistler-based sports and nightlife website called 33Mag.com, and reported for Vancouver-area blog Surrey604.com.

After moving to Tofino, on the western shores of Vancouver Island, I freelanced for the Tofino-Ucluelet Westerly and the Globe and Mail Newspaper, while hosting a weekly two-hour arts and culture radio show on 90.1 FM (CHMZ).
